Sensitive Scalp Causes & Solutions

Why does my scalp hurt or sting when I shampoo or colour or comb my hair? Or why does my scalp itch more than usual? It most likely means that you have a sensitive scalp

What is it?

A sensitive scalp may feel a stinging, burning or itching feeling. It may even appear red. Well you might be wondering, “ My scalp has never been this sensitive, so why is it now?” Let’s uncover the possible causes that could have led to your scalp being more sensitive!

Causes

  • Hair dyes, perms, rebonding all these procedures add a lot of chemicals to your scalp and hair, which can be very damaging. The stinging/burning/itchy feeling could be a result of a chemical reaction. This is why it is advisable to let your hair rest. For colouring, let your hair rest at least 4-6 weeks, but of course, the longer you let your hair rest, it gives it more time to recover.

  • Another reason could be an allergic reaction to an ingredient used in the hair dye/perming or rebonding solution. Hence, it is encouraged to stick to a hair dye brand which you have used before without any side effects. Or use a semi-permanent hair dye which is less damaging to your hair and scalp.

  • Shampoos. Perhaps you have been using the wrong type of shampoo. Dandruff shampoos tend to be relatively strong/harsh which could sting your scalp if you have a sensitive scalp. Use a gentler shampoo that is able to calm and soothe your scalp instead!

  • Weather. If you live in a country that has a cold, dry climate, it can make your scalp itch and flake more. And if you live in a hot and humid climate, there is a tendency to sweat more which makes your scalp more itchy.

  • Sunburn. Yes, our scalp can be sunburnt too. Our scalp is made of skin too which makes it prone to being sunburnt. It causes our scalp to itch and flake. And if you are bald or have thin hair, you are more vulnerable to scalp burn.

  • Dandruff, white itchy flakes that appear when we scratch our hair. It can be managed with dandruff shampoo. But if you have a sensitive scalp, opt for a milder dandruff shampoo.

Solutions

  • Let your hair rest from all the chemical procedures you do

  • Use a more gentle, soothing shampoo for your scalp. There are plenty of soothing shampoos for sensitive scalps

  • Wear a hat or apply sunscreen on the exposed areas on your head
